Swamis Surfing Association - October Surf Contest Cancellation - Swamis Club Challenge

Swami’s Club Members

Coalition of Surfing Club Members

The proposed Swami’s Surfing Association surf contest scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2010 has been canceled.  The contest was advertised contingent on sufficient funding being secured. Unfortunately, efforts to acquire sufficient funding prior to the event were unsuccessful.  The Swami’s Surfing Association wants to thank the surf clubs, sponsors and contestants that pledged support for the proposed contest.  The Swami’s Surfing Association is continuing to work toward hosting a quality surf contest in 2011.

The Swami’s Surfing Association wishes to apologize for any inconvenience cancelling the contest may have caused.  The Swami’s mission includes support of the sport of surfing, and we will continue to do so to the best of our ability.  We hope to have a great contest next year.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Mike Coleman

President, Swami’s Surfing Association

SSA Facebook

SSA Website vs SSA Facebook:

Just a FYI - it is super easy to update the Swamis Surfing Association Facebook site.  Thus, the Facebook site has been getting more of the SSA love recently.  Although the SSA Website will still be updated with All Major SSA Events and Happenings - the SSA Facebook site will have more consistent updates posted.  This does not mean SSA is trying to force you to join Facebook is some evil plot.  You can view the SSA Facebook site without having a Facebook account.  BUT, if you want to get updates posted to your own Facebook feed you have to 'Like' the SSA Facebook site.

SSA 15th Annual Blind Surf - Sunday September 19th - Ponto - 8am to 3pm

On Sunday, Sept. 19, a surfing event for the sight impaired will be held at South Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad (also known as Ponto) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  (best photo opportunities will be taking place between 10:00 and noon.).  Blind participants will experience the joy of surfing with the help of experienced volunteers.

This is the 15th year that sight impaired youth and adults from all areas of San Diego have been invited to hit the waves under the super vision of expert surfers. The non-profit event is sponsored by the Swamis Surfing Association, the Encinitas Lions club, and the San Diego Surfing Academy.

Bruce King of the Swamis Surfing Association, co-founder of the event said  “Its just a joy to see the look on their faces.  As surfers we enjoy sharing our love for the sport, the ocean and living each moment …like riding a wave.”

August 2010 President’s Message

I want to thank everyone that had the time to attend our July general meeting. We had a conversation on the proposal concerning the sale of club merchandise containing our club logo.  The ideas and opinions expressed will send the board back to the drawing board to come up with an acceptable solution.  We also had a great presentation by Vice-President John Reinhardt on his trip to El Salvador and Whitney’s experience competing in the river standup surfing competition. Congratulations to Whitney for taking second place in the completion.  A big thanks to both John and Whitney for their presentations.

We love presentations about surf trips and experiences from our members.  If you want to make a presentation, let any of the board members know and we will schedule you time at one of the general meetings.

July is over and was a dismal month for weather, water temp, and surf. July 2010 is on record for being the coldest July on record for San Diego.  We are all still waiting on the water and weather to warm up!!  With any luck we will get a little surf.

Otis will be reporting on the results of the Malibu contest this month.  Congratulations to all the SSA members that represented the club in this event.   Remember the Oceanside contest is this month; contact Otis if you are interested in competing.

The SSA had a good turnout at Camp Pendleton assisting with the surf session for the Wounded Warrior/Jimmy Miller Foundation event.  This was a very rewarding experience and I want to thank all our members that had the time to participate.  This is a monthly event and you are welcome to attend.  You can find the dates on the Jimmy Miller foundation web site.  If you have the time, the Marines can use your help.  I know most of you are unable to attend but check it out if you can. Next surf therapy sessions are, August 10, and 24, 2010, 0900, Del Mar Jetties, Camp Pendleton.

The August meeting should prove to be very entertaining.  The board has organized a special night. We are calling it, “Dinner and a Movie.”   We will have dinner prepared and served by our new club member, Marcello.  Le Chef Marcello will be preparing lasagna (with meat and marinara sauces) served with a gourmet salad. Dinner will be $5.00 a plate and $1.00 for beverages.

Next on the agenda is guest and film maker, Ira Opper, who will discuss and present his surf move, “The Legends of Malibu.”  This is a great opportunity to meet one of surfing’s finest surf film producers, and view a great film.

With any luck our club sweatshirts will be in this month and we will be distributing them at the meeting.

The board has approved an extension for former SSA members to re-establish their membership with the club.  The extension will continue until September 30, 2010.  This is a final attempt to get our former member back in the club.  Please get the word out to those former members still interested in being a SSA member.  Former Member Application Forms can be found on the SSA web site.  Former members may complete the form, attach the appropriate membership fee and send the application to our PO Box or deliver it to any board member.

Hope to see everyone at the meeting.  Bring a friend and have some fun!

Our next general meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10Th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Solana Beach Community Center. I hope everyone can make it.

Stay safe and surf well.
Mike

Weekend Kook Abuse

Blog/jaws.JPG

For those of you who missed it over the weekend - courtesy of the San Diego Union...

'Cardiff Kook' meets 'Jaws' in Encinitas

BY TERRY RODGERS, SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE, DAVID BROOKS

Passers by gawk at the anonymously installed shark that swallowed up Cardiff's surfer statue early Saturday morning.

An often-abused statue of a surfer on Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas was turned into a Jaws-dropping artwork early Saturday morning by a group of unknown pranksters.

GREAT LINE FROM THE ARTICLE 'They said the shark’s didn’t appear without warning. Large sharklike fins had been placed on the other side of the highway, along San Elijo Road, earlier this week then, over the course of the past two days, the fins were moved closer to the statue, as if the shark was circling in on its prey.'
